Josep Maria Gili
Dr. Josep Maria Gili is a Research Professor of the Spanish National Research Council. Presently he works at the Institute of Marine Science of Barcelona where he created the Marine Benthos Ecology Group. For 35 years he has been working in different fields of marine ecology, with emphasis on the integrated study of coastal ecosystems, the structure and dynamics of benthic communities, zooplankton ecology, trophic ecology of marine invertebrates, as well as, biodiversity and taxonomy of cnidarians.
Professor Gili has been the leader of more than 30 national and international research projects, 15 doctoral theses and has published 200 papers in international scientific journals. In addition he has published and edited 14 books and contributed more than 40 papers in outreach journals. As Prof. of Ecology of the University of Barcelona, he has dedicated a large part of his work to the formation of students, teaching classes and doctorate courses, presenting lectures, and organizing international meetings and courses for students and doctors. At the present time he is developing research projects in the Mediterranean, Antarctic, South Pacific and North Atlantic. Recently he received the Sant Jordi Award 2010 (National Catalonian Award of Environmental Sciences).
