The CSIC’s open-air cinema returns on Friday 18 September to the terrace of the Institut de Cièncias del Mar (ICM-CSIC), on the Barceloneta seafront promenade.
CSIC de Cine, the open-air cinema programme of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), will hold its third edition in Barcelona with *Los Tigres*, a thriller starring two brothers who are divers, which will spark a discussion on oceanographic research. The Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) will once again host the series in Catalonia, with the support of the CSIC Regional Office. As a new feature, this edition will also see the participation of the Marine Technology Unit (UTM-CSIC).
Meanwhile, in Madrid, the initiative will return for its fifth edition to the steps of the CSIC’s central campus – famous for featuring in numerous films and TV series – to tackle issues such as care, historical memory and the medical and social implications of Alzheimer’s and Tourette’s syndrome. The films to be screened there are Yo no moriré de amor (11 September), Incontrolable (18 September) and La cena (25 September).
All CSIC de Cine screenings will be free of charge (popcorn and water included) and will be preceded by a discussion with research staff covering some of the themes raised in the films. Furthermore, the programme will be accessible to facilitate the participation of people with visual or hearing impairments, reduced mobility or autism, amongst other groups.
'CSIC de Cine' in Barcelona: suspense beneath the sea
Los tigres will be the feature film for the CSIC Cinema session in Barcelona. On Friday 18 September, the terrace of the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) will host the screening of this film by Alberto Rodríguez about two diver siblings (Antonio de la Torre and Bárbara Lennie) who, after making risky decisions, find themselves caught up in a disturbing suspenseful plot. The film, which will be screened in Spanish, won the Goya for Best Special Effects at the latest edition of the Spanish film awards.
Working conditions at sea and scientific diving will be among the key topics of the preliminary meeting with research staff, a colloquium which will also address the impact of climate change on ecosystems and marine dynamics. The discussion, to be held in Catalan, will feature Jordi Sorribas, director of the CSIC Marine Technology Unit (UTM-CSIC), and two researchers from the ICM-CSIC: Aurora Ricart, who studies the effects of global change on coastal marine ecosystems, particularly underwater forests, through scientific diving, and Jordi Solé, who specialises in the analysis and modelling of energy resources.
Inclusion and accessibility
The pre-screening discussion will feature a Catalan sign language interpreter and live subtitling. The film can be enjoyed thanks to accessible subtitles in Spanish or audio description headsets, which will be available to those who request them.
The barrier-free venue will be equipped with an induction loop to assist those who use hearing aids.

Ticket bookings and practical information
The screening in Barcelona will have 120 seats; it is free of charge but requires advance booking, with tickets already available for purchase. Doors will open at 7.00 pm and close at 7.30 pm, when the meet-and-greet with the research team will begin. The screening will start a few minutes after 8.30 pm, and seats will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
The ICM-CSIC is located at Paseo Marítimo de la Barceloneta, 37–49, between the Hospital del Mar and the Olympic Towers. The nearest underground station is Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica (yellow L4 line). The terminus of several bus routes is just a few metres from the venue.
In the event of bad weather, the event will take place indoors.
CSIC de Cine is a public outreach project run by the CSIC, spearheaded by its Deputy Presidency for Scientific Culture and Citizen Science (VACC-CSIC), which aims to raise issues of social interest. In Barcelona, the project involves the CSIC’s Catalonia Regional Office, the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) and the Marine Technology Unit (UTM-CSIC).
