By combining art, creativity, science and technology, this project, funded by the European Community, aims to raise public awareness of the importance of the ocean in maintaining planetary health, as well as the need to respect and protect marine ecosystems.
Ocean literacy is, in fact, a highly relevant topic that forms part of the United Nations’ actions. In this session, we will take a closer look at the Art4Sea project, which places this interdisciplinary work in the Mediterranean, fostering collaboration among artists, scientists, creative professionals and experts in digital technology.
A total of 24 artists were selected and trained in marine conservation topics and subsequently carried out artistic residencies on three small Mediterranean islands: Alonissos (Greece), Gozo (Malta) and Ustica (Italy). There, they drew inspiration from Mediterranean landscapes and cultural traditions, engaged with local communities, and received scientific mentoring from researchers at the ICM to develop their works.
During the session, one of the works created on each of the islands will be presented, followed by a roundtable discussion with the participation of scientists, artists and experts from the Art and Science group of the Institute of Marine Sciences. Finally, the virtual exhibition will also be available to view.
