On Saturday 5th of June, World Environment Day, the Ultra Clean Marathon is organized as part of the Let’s Clean Europe Action Programme (7th to 9th of May). The Ultra Clean Marathon is a sport event that aims to raise awareness about the amount of litter that is thrown uncontrollably into nature, as well as promote awareness-raising actions through the collection of abandoned waste illegally dumped in forests, beaches, rivers, etc.
This year is celebrated the third edition of this sport event, which consists of a 60 km eco-race where professional runners participate. People can join them by running, walking or collecting waste during the race, giving support or doing awareness actions. In this year’s race, runners will leave Terrassa, crossing the Collserola Natural Space, the Besòs valley, until reaching the beaches of Barcelona, arriving to La Barceloneta Beach. At the end of the race, all the waste will be gathered.
How can we participate?
The ICM Young Researchers Association will contribute to the Ultra Clean Marathon with a beach and sea-surface cleaning at the Espigó del Bogatell, from 8 to 10 a.m. Afterwards, we will quantify and separate the collected garbage. No worries if you cannot come for the 2 hours. Come and collaborate as long as you can, any help is welcome. Btw, do not forget your snorkel gear!
