The Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM) is the largest marine research centre of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). It is also the first marine science centre to be accredited as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence, a recognition to the institution’s leadership in the field of marine research in Spain and to its commitment to create social impact.
Our goal is to develop research of excellence to inspire a society in harmony with the blue planet, in line with the values of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

About the role and the team
We are recruiting an enthusiastic and highly motivated researcher in bioinformatics at the ICM. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and productive team within the Department of Renewable Marine Resources, which focuses on the study of the biology and ecology of exploited aquatic species, their communities and ecosystems. They will be supervised and report directly to Prof. Jorge Fernandes and Prof. Francesc Piferrer.
The newly recruited bioinformatician will work on EPIBROOD, investigating intergenerational epigenetic effects in Norwegian salmon aquaculture. This research and innovation project is financed by the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund and comprises an international team of experts in aquaculture epigenetics, along with the leading Atlantic salmon producers Mowi and Benchmark Genetics. The EPIBROOD project will determine whether broodstock rearing environments and maturation practices employed by breeding companies in Norway have substantial intergenerational (parent–offspring) effects on the fish phenotypes. Moreover, we will examine the underlying epigenetic mechanisms in order to identify relevant biomarkers.
Job description
The successful candidate will be involved in several tasks that include:
Analysis of omics data sets from EPIBROOD partners
Meta-analysis linking to other project experiments and published data in literature
Preparation of libraries for next-generation sequencing
Managing access of lab members to the Marine Bioinformatics platform
Supporting bioinformatic analyses within the research group
Dissemination and communication of project findings
Data management according to FAIR principles
Preparation of periodic reports for the project coordinator
Expected background and skills
MSc in Genetics and Cell Biology, or equivalent degree
Excellent background in i) Aquaculture, ii) Genetic improvement and iii) Omics technologies in animal production, health and welfare
Documented experience in analysis of RNA-seq, small RNA-seq, EM-seq and ATAC-seq data is an absolute requirement
Proficiency in the packages DiffBind, HOMER, MethylKit, Bismark, DEseq2 and Bowtie is fundamental
Ability to write custom scripts in Python, Perl and Java is advantageous
