Turbulence and mixing in limnologic and oceanographic fields:

  • 1) Acquisition of data using microstructure free-falling profilers, application of post-processing techniques and spatio-temporal data analysis.
  • 2) Characterization of the intermittency of turbulence in aquatic systems:
  • 2.1) External intermittency (large scales): The intermittent active regions (patches) observed in the fluid are characterized using different parameters (patch size, Thorpe scale,...) , which are analyzed from an statistical point of view.
  • 2.2) Internal intermittency (small scales): The very active regions that appear intermittently within the patches are characterized using different statistical models such as the lognormal and a more general model, the multifractal model.
  • 3) Effects of the turbulent events on the mixing through the water column (mixing mechanisms involved).
  • 4) Mixing and dynamics in different environments (lakes, sea and ocean): Instrumentation set-up (CTD, ADV and ADCP instrumentation), deployment, post-processing and data analysis. Air-sea interaction and influence on mixing and dynamics observed in the aquatic system.
