They are part of Stanford University's ‘Ranking of the World Scientists: World's Top 2% Scientists’, which highlights the most relevant scientists in the world according to the citations received in their publications.
The 2023 list of the world’s most influential scientists, compiled by Stanford University, includes 15 Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) members in its latest edition, published in the summer 2024, three more than the previous year. The “Ranking of the World Scientists: World’s Top 2% Scientists” highlights the world’s most relevant scientists based on the citations received in their publications over the past year.
This ranking, now in its seventh edition, includes researchers from 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields, using Scopus data provided by Elsevier. The results are presented in two lists: the first evaluates each researcher's full professional trajectory, while the second focuses on the impact generated during 2023. According to Scopus data, scientists who appear in the list are in the top 2% most impactful, consolidating this ranking as one of the most comprehensive and inclusive worldwide.
In this year’s edition, 334 researchers from CSIC stand out, 15 of whom are from ICM-CSIC. They represent diverse fields such as fisheries, oceanography, environmental sciences, marine biology, geology, microbiology, and atmospheric sciences. In four of these fields, one of the 10 most influential researchers in Spain is from the ICM-CSIC, positioning the Institute among the leading research centers in the country.
These results reaffirm ICM’s capacity to produce high-impact, internationally recognized science across diverse fields of knowledge, consolidating its position as a leading global institute in ocean sciences.
