The biologist at the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM) of Barcelona Janire Salazar has been awarded the SCB Outreach award for her contribution to scientific dissemination at the fifth edition of the Catalan Society of Biology (SCB) Awards, held on September 9.

This award recognizes her contribution to the outreach project "El Mar a Fons", which has spreaded knowledge about the seas and oceans in the educational field through a wide range of didactic proposals among which is the emblematic ICM submarine workshop.

The central element of this activity is a wooden replica of a submarine very similar to the one used by researchers for oceanographic research. The workshop, that until now researchers have brought to schools, fishermen's guilds and hospitals, seeks that students, fishermen or patients put themselves in the shoes of researchers through a dive simulation.

"In this workshop, the research carried out by a real group of researchers is shown with the excitement aroused by exploring marine life through a submarine", explains Salazar, who celebrates that the activity "has brought the scientific sector closer to society and generate a space for reflection".

"It is a joint work of many people, since the submarine workshop has been evolving with the public, and that is how we believe dissemination should be done, allowing and encouraging the participation of people from all ages and expertise", concludes the biologist.

The SCB awards ceremony was led by Dr. Josep Clotet and chaired by Joandomènec Ros, president of the Institute for Catalan Studies (IEC), to which the SCB belongs; Montserrat Corominas, president of the SCB; Anna Messeguer, head of the Operations and Institutional Relations Area of the General Directorate for Research and Innovation in Health of the Government of Catalonia, and Julia Miralles, science and university advisor of the Barcelona City Council.

These awards recognize the outstanding contribution of the professionals of the biological sciences of the Catalan-speaking territories in the last year in six different categories: SCB Leandro Cervera Professional Career Award, SCB Scientific Article Award, SCB Disclosure Award, SCB Young Researcher Award, SCB High School Research Work Award and SCB Start-Up Award, the latter created in this latest edition.
