The Institut de Ciències del Mar (Institute of Marine Sciences, ICM) of Barcelona has joined the 'Barcelona + Sostenible' (B+S) network, a network including more than 1,000 organizations committed to environmental, social and economic sustainability. Among them we can find from citizen entities to business and commercial organizations, educational centres, universities, professional associations, unions and administrations.

The ICM effectively became part of the network last July with the signing of the 'Citizen Commitment to Sustainability 2012-2022', by which the ICM commits to contribute to the Barcelona’s sustainable transformation with its actions. In this framework, the ICM will promote different sustainability measures and will develop projects with the other members of the network.

The Institute has its own Sustainability Action Plan, which includes a series of actions to be carried out until 2022 and aligned with the objectives of the Citizen Commitment to Sustainability 2012-2022.

The ICM Action Plan pursues two specific aims: to reduce the waste generated by scientific activity and make it more sustainable from an energy point of view, and to contribute to making Barcelona an example of a sustainable and environmentally friendly city, especially with the marine environment.

In the same vein, the B+S network aims to promote a kind of 'culture of sustainability', by rethinking how we organize our society and our lives in order to find solutions to improve our quality of life and minimize our impact on the environment and available natural resources.

Likewise, the B+S seeks to transmit this 'culture of sustainability' to citizens, educational centres, organizations, and entities and businesses in the city of Barcelona through the principle of shared responsibility.

In this context, the city of Barcelona has participated this weekend through different activities in the 'Let's Clean Up Europe', an action throughout Europe aiming at raising environmental awareness among the general public about waste and cleanliness.
