Fostering action-oriented knowledge transfer for the benefit of society

The ICM wants to be a key player in the Blue Economy and the innovation ecosystem at local, regional, and national levels, while becoming a leader in the Mediterranean region. Here we highlight some of our recent impacts.

ICATMAR, an example of cooperation

The Catalan Research Institute for the Governance of the Sea (ICATMAR), a cooperative body between the ICM and the Generalitat of Catalonia, has as main lines of action, on the one hand, the knowledge of the biological state of the species of fishing interest, the quantification of the impact of recreational fishing and the socioeconomic monitoring of these sectors, and on the other hand, the collection and analysis of oceanographic data (marine currents, temperature, salinity) which will then be used, among others, to make predictions of the evolution of these variables.

Improving the observation of the ocean from space

We participate in a game-changer in Earth observation tech from the European Space Agency (ESA) initiative: the CIMR L2PAD project, that aims to develop a pioneer ground-based processor for the next Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer (CIMR) satellite, set to span four years from 2023 to 2027.

Innovative technologies for marine ecosystem management

An oceanographic campaign has validated a set of innovative technologies developed within the framework of a research project coordinated by the University of Girona (UdG) with the participation of ICM, with the aim of improving the supervision, monitoring, and management of marine ecosystems.

The research project is called "Long-Term Platform for the Observation of Marine Ecosystems (PLOME)" and is working to develop a non-invasive and modular platform to gather essential data for the scientific community to supervise, monitor, and manage marine ecosystems more efficiently.

Pioneering technology to improve underwater seismicity detection

We are part of a public-private consortium that will promote the development of a pioneering technology to improve the detection of seismicity in underwater environments. These new techniques will have a much higher level of precision than the tools currently available to seismologists and will help to further the study of seismic events such as earthquakes and tsunamis.
