From its beginnings in the 1950s, the IIP had laboratories in Blanes, Castelló, Vinaròs, Vigo and Cádiz, from which new centres sprang up.

The journal is indexed in most scientific article databases and is distributed to many marine research institutions worldwide.

The Gold Medal is the highest distinction awarded by the Catalan Government and will be officially conferred on 9 September within the framework of the National Day of Catalonia celebrations.
